Drawing from both Classical Ballet and Modern dance, Contemporary dance is an abstract form of movement that focuses on emotional expression and storytelling. Influenced by the likes of Merce Cunningham and Twyla Tharp, this transcendent form of dance has reached new heights of popularity thanks to T.V. shows, such as So You Think You Can Dance. A strong technical foundation is necessary to execute often inverted or “rule-breaking” steps and combinations, and students are advised to enroll in Ballet classes alongside this course.
In this Advanced Beginner-level class for experienced dancers between the ages of 10 and 17, with a minimum of 1 to 2 years of experience, will continue to build on basic contemporary technique from the beginner classes. You will focus on continuing to develop strength and control of movement, flexibility, core stability, improvisational/interpretive abilities, and connection to choreography and music.
A Minimum of 1-2 years prior Contemporary OR Ballet experience is required. Placement approval is at the instructor’s discretion.
If you’re unsure about suitability, please do a Drop-In for the first class of the session and the instructor will make that determination at the end of class.
Fitted black tank top or leotard
Fitted black dance shorts, or leggings
1) Tan footless or convertible tights (optional to be worn with shorts) NO FOOTED TIGHTS
2) Socks or Barefoot (for beginner-level classes only) or Lyrical Half-Sole Shoe (Advanced Beginner and Higher)
French braid, TIGHT high pony tail, or bun (hair should not have to be adjusted in the middle of class)
NO JEWELRY (exception: stud earrings and medical alert jewelry)
